UW-Eau Claire Forensics Team Places
16th in Nation at AFA Forensics Meet

 MAILED:  April 12, 2004

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire forensics team took 16th place at the American Forensics Association National Tournament held at California State University-Long Beach.

Only the top 20 teams receive awards at the AFA, and for the past 15 years UW-Eau Claire has always placed in the top 20. This was the largest AFA tournament in the history of AFA with 112 schools competing.

“We would like to have placed in the top 15 at this tournament, but based on the surprising size of the tournament and the fact that we only took 31 events,” director of forensics Karen Morris said, “16th place started looking very good to the students.”

Students who made the semi-finals were junior Andy Bevernitz, Clintonville, prose poetry, and junior Christopher Conklin, Green Bay, impromptu speaking.

UW-Eau Claire students who made the quarter-finals were senior Brandon M. Buchanan, San Antonio, Texas, extemporaneous speaking and communication analysis; junior Kelly M. Bender, New London, informative speaking and communication analysis; and freshman Christine Zani, Hurley, communication analysis.

The team next will travel to the National Forensics Association National tournament in Macomb, Ill.
