Student Senate Presents ‘KICK’
To Promote Diversity

 MAILED:  March 17, 2004

EAU CLAIRE — The Student Life and Diversity Commission of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Student Senate will present “KICK” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 31, in Schofield Auditorium.

“KICK” is a professional theatrical event that helps promote understanding among all races, religions and cultures in the United States. “KICK” is a proactive and entertaining production that explores the impact of stereotypes. There will be a pre-show activity, a 40-minute play and a follow-up session.

The play, which follows the life of a high school senior who encounters racial stereotypes, asks the following questions: What are the costs of speaking out against injustice? Do young people have the power to create change? How can we be seen as unique individuals in a world of powerful, sometimes demeaning racial images? What about political correctness? Are there limits to how sensitive and tolerant we have to be?

“This is a realistic performance that deals with the same issues that people encounter everyday,” Student Life and Diversity director Lauren Demerse said. “It will help people to understand and accept everyone, not despite their differences, but because of their differences. Differences make us who we are and each and every person should be proud of that. This performance helps to emphasize this,” Demerse said.

“KICK” is being presented and sponsored by the National Conference for Community and Justice. NCCJ is the founder of Brotherhood-Sisterhood camp and has a 75-year history of fighting bias, bigotry and racism in America. The NCCJ promotes understanding and respect among all races, religions and cultures through advocacy, conflict resolution and education.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information call the Student Senate office, (715) 836-4646 or email Lauren Demerse,
