37th Annual Jazz Festival
Set for April 2-3 at UW-Eau Claire

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire music and theatre arts department will present the 37th annual Jazz Festival on Friday, April 2, and Saturday, April 3.

Festival events will include critiqued performances, guest artist clinicians and three evening concerts featuring the Airmen of Note, the David Berkman Quartet, the Andrew Neesley Quintet and UW-Eau Claire Jazz Ensemble I, under the direction of Robert Baca, associate professor of music.

The festival will open with a concert by the Airmen of Note at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 1, in UW-Eau Claire’s Zorn Arena. The Airmen of Note is the premier jazz ensemble of the United States Air Force. The group tours twice every year and performs at many jazz and music education festivals. They have performed and recorded with some of the big names in jazz, including Sara Vaughan, Clark Terry and Randy Brecker. This concert is sponsored by the Eau Claire Leader-Telegram and the UW-Eau Claire Jazz Festival.

Friday, April 2, will be devoted to college students from around the upper Midwest. The day will be filled with critiqued performances, clinics, guest artist performances and an evening concert at the Memorial High School Auditorium. Pre-concert music will begin at 7 p.m. with the Andrew Neesley Quintet. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. and feature the David Berkman Quartet, UW-Eau Claire Jazz Ensemble I and the honor college big band and combo. The David Berkman Quartet features Dave Berkman on piano, Dick Oatts on saxophone, Ugonna Okegwa on bass and Nasheet Waits on drums.

On Saturday, April 3, the festival will focus on middle and high school students. The schedule will be similar to Friday but also feature a performance by UW-Eau Claire Jazz Ensemble III, under the direction of Dr. Jeffery Crowell, assistant professor of music, at 12:30 p.m. in Zorn Arena. Saturday night pre-concert music will begin at 6:30 p.m. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. and again feature the David Berkman Quartet and UW-Eau Claire Jazz Ensemble I, this time joined by the honor middle school and high school big bands and combos.

Friday and Saturday night tickets, available at the University Service Center, (715) 836-3727 or (800) 949-UWEC, are $12 for the general public; $10 for those 62 and older, children 17 and younger, and students, faculty and staff with a university ID; and $8 for student festival participants.
