UW-Eau Claire’s ‘Opening Doors’
Pre-College Camp Hires Coordinator

 MAILED:  March 15, 2004

EAU CLAIRE — Stephanie Zighelboim will serve as coordinator for the 2004 “Opening Doors,” the Multicultural Affairs Office’s pre-college camp at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

“Opening Doors” or “Abriendo Puertas” gives economically disadvantaged and Latino youth the opportunity to experience life on UW-Eau Claire’s campus for a week during the summer. Participants are immersed in the college environment by living in the dorms, eating in the dining halls and interacting with UW-Eau Claire student mentors and counselors.

Zighelboim, a Venezuela native, graduated from UW-Eau Claire in 2000 with a major in Latin American studies and Spanish. She earned a master’s degree in history with emphasis on Latin America from UW-Eau Claire in 2003. She has been a member of the Latin American studies steering committee since 2000.

Participants in “Opening Doors” will hear lectures on various topics in a college classroom setting and will participate in activities like field trips and teamwork building exercises. They also will interact with Latino professionals from the area and UW-Eau Claire graduates.

The program’s goal is to give underrepresented youth opportunities and experiences that will prepare them for the world of higher education.

“Opening Doors” is for youth entering grade 9 this fall. It runs from July 11-18.
