Students Studying Abroad in Spain
 MAILED:  March 12, 2004

Forty-nine UW-Eau Claire students are studying this semester at the University of Valladolid in Spain. Valladolid is located 120 miles north of Madrid in the province of Castilla y León.

UW-Eau Claire’s Center of International Education staff has accounted for all of the UW-Eau Claire students since bombs ripped through commuter trains in Madrid Thursday morning killing nearly 200 people and wounding more than 1,400. All the UW-Eau Claire students are safe; none of them witnessed the violence in Madrid.

None of the UW-Eau Claire students have indicated an interest in coming home early from their study abroad experience because of the violence in Madrid.

Karl Markgraf, director of the Center for International Education, is available to talk with the media about the program in Spain and how his staff works with students studying abroad and their families during an international crisis.

You can reach Markgraf at (715) 836-4411 or Markgraf@uwec.edu. If necessary, you can contact Markgraf during the weekend at his home, (715) 831-9038.
