UW-Eau Claire Graphic Designers
Receive Recognition for University Publications

 MAILED:  March 8, 2004

EAU CLAIRE — University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire graphic designers received three awards in the 2004 association-wide promotion and marketing competition of the Association of College Unions International. Winning entries were exhibited and the awards presented at ACUI’s 84th annual conference Feb. 27-March 1 in Washington, D.C.

The awards recognize publications designed by UW-Eau Claire graduates Paula Lucas and Derek Wallen.

Paula Lucas received a first-place award for her brochure promoting the university’s casual catering program for student organizations. Humorous retro photos and shapes were integrated in a casual format that informs student groups about lower-cost catering policies and menu items available to them through university dining services. A heavyweight stock and multiple-panel format invites the brochure being saved and displayed.

From Becker, Minn., Lucas received a bachelor of fine arts degree in graphic design from UW-Eau Claire in May 2003. She is presently a graphic designer for Target in Minneapolis.
Derek Wallen’s brochure for the 2003 Summer Session Programs series received a first place award, and his instructors guide to the university’s textbook rental system was cited for honorable mention.

The Summer Session Programs brochure promoted the campus’ free summer series of outdoor music and films and provided an at-a-glance schedule poster punctuated by artist photos and film stills. Wallen’s design created the nuance of long-forgotten, fondly remembered, late 1960s-early 1970s fun in the sun. The events presented on the series inspired the collage of summer leisure activities; many images were raided from family photo albums.

Wallen’s design for the instructional resource rental brochure communicates the often complex policies of UW-Eau Claire undergraduate textbook rental program. An updated, contemporary feel was achieved by using a clean international type style, close-up images of books and a cosmic Web page-inspired layout that brought unity to the design. The design conveys that an orderly system is in place regarding this operation.

From Kenosha, Wallen received a bachelor of fine arts degree in graphic design from UW-Eau Claire in December 2002. He is currently enrolled in the master of fine arts program at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.

Lucas and Wallen designed the brochures while working in the University Centers and Programs information design services area. The publications were written and edited by information design program manager Juelie Sires.

University Centers and Programs is a Student Services unit of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and a longtime member of the Association of College Unions International. ACUI has served the college union and student activities field since 1914, and its members represent nearly 1,000 campuses around the world.

Other institutions recognized in the promotion and marketing competition include Boise State University, California Polytechnic State University, California State University-Sacramento, Indiana University-Bloomington, Kent State University, Oregon State University, the University of Arizona, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, the University of Montana, the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, the University of Southern California, and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Award winners will be featured in the July 2004 issue of ACUI’s magazine, The Bulletin.
