EAU CLAIRE — Nearly 250 faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will be asked this month to participate in the first national Faculty Survey of Student Engagement.
“The survey is designed to measure faculty expectations for student engagement in educational practices that we know are linked with high levels of learning and development,” said UW-Eau Claire Provost Ron Satz.
The faculty survey, which will be sent to randomly selected faculty at the end of March, will focus on things such as their perceptions of how often students engage in various activities; the importance they place on different areas of learning and development; the nature and frequency of their interactions with students; and how faculty organize class time.
“The results are intended to spark meaningful discussions on campus about teaching, learning and the quality of students’ educational experiences at UW-Eau Claire,” Satz said, noting the FSSE is similar to the National Survey of Student Engagement that UW-Eau Claire students also are completing this semester.
UW-Eau Claire students first participated in NSSE in 2001. The FSSE was pilot tested in spring 2003. The current survey is the first time it’s available nationally. All UW System comprehensive universities are participating.
The project is co-sponsored by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Pew Forum on Undergraduate Learning. It’s administered by the Center for Survey Research at Indiana University and supported in part by a grant from the Lumina Foundation for Education.
