UW-Eau Claire Choral Program
To Present Concert Featuring Four Ensembles

 MAILED:  March 1, 2004

EAU CLAIRE —The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Choral Program will present a concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 14, in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The American Choral Director’s Association Student Chapter is sponsoring the concert, which will feature the Singing Statesmen, Symphonic Choir, Women’s Chorus and Concert Choir.

“The ACDA Concert is a unique opportunity for the public to hear four of our outstanding ensembles in one performance,” said Dr. Gary Schwartzhoff, director of choral activities. “This concert provides the choral ensembles with an opportunity to perform early in the semester.”

The Singing Statesmen, directed by Schwartzhoff, will open the concert with René Clausen’s “All That Hath Life and Breath Praise Ye the Lord” and will perform other songs by Alan Dunbar, Lara Fabian and Pietro Mascagni. Senior Jenifer Schwartzhoff, Eau Claire, and sophomore James Hahn, Platteville, will provide piano accompaniment.

The Symphonic Choir, under the direction of Dr. Alan Rieck, assistant professor of music, will continue the concert with “Anvil Chorus” from “Il Trovatore” and “Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves” from “Nabucco” by Guiseppe Verdi. The ensemble will finish with the “March of the Toreadors” from “Carmen” by Georges Bizet. Senior Kristin Yost, Sisseton, S.D., will provide piano accompaniment for the group.

The Women’s Chorus, under the direction of Rieck, Schwartzhoff, and senior Christina Burgess, Wausau, will perform “America” from “West Side Story” by Leonard Bernstein, songs by Brant Adams and Walter Robinson, and “Dance on My Heart” by Allen Koepke. Sophomore Steven Hobert, Hartland, will provide piano accompaniment.

The concert will close with the Concert Choir, also directed by Schwartzhoff. The choir will sing “Psalm 96” by Jan Pieterzoon Sweelinck, “Search Me and Know My Heart” by James Fritschel, and works by Philip Lawson, Alice Parker and Melius Christiansen. Junior Stacie Olson, Neenah, and Jenifer Schwartzhoff will provide piano accompaniment.

The UW-Eau Claire Foundation, through private gifts, assisted the department of music with the purchase of the new Wenger choral risers that are being displayed in their inaugural performance at the concert. The Student Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association, the Student Chapter of Music Educators National Conference and Phi Mu Alpha also contributed funds to the campaign. In addition, a grant was received from the Schnack Fund, a UW-Eau Claire Foundation fund that supports technology and equipment needs across campus. The Schnack Fund honors the legacy of UW-Eau Claire’s fifth chancellor, Larry Schnack, who served the university for 32 years.

Tickets, available at the University Service Center, (715) 836-3727 or (800) 949-UWEC, are $4.75 for the general public; $3.75 for those 62 and older, children 17 and younger and faculty and staff with a university ID; and $1.25 for students with a university ID.
