UW-Eau Claire’s NYSP
Receives Meritorious Award

 MAILED:  Feb. 27, 2004

EAU CLAIRE — The National Youth Sports Program at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire recently was awarded a Meritorious Award, recognizing it as one of the top NYSP programs in the country.

UW-Eau Claire’s NYSP program has won the Meritorious Award every year since 1993. In 1991 and 1998, it earned the Silvio O. Conte Award of Excellence, given to the top program in the nation.

“We are grateful for receiving the award,” said Lisa McIntyre, activity director for UW-Eau Claire’s NYSP. “We hope to serve as a model for other programs.”

UW-Eau Claire’s NYSP was one of 23 programs to receive a Meritorious Award, McIntyre said, noting there are 205 programs in the nation. UW-Eau Claire was one of five finalists for the Silvio O. Conte Award of Excellence.

“The (Meritorious) award is for programs that not only meet the guidelines of the national office but rise above them and really stand out,” said McIntyre.

NYSP was created in 1969 as a free summer camp program for economically deprived families. Boys and girls, ages 10-15, meeting the economic criteria can participate at no cost.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Service funds NYSP and the USDA summer food service program provides food.

NYSP helps young people acquire good health practices and become better citizens. It also provides them with opportunities to learn sports skills, participate is sports competition and improve physical fitness.

“The strength of our program is the 60 or so dedicated staff we have working in the program,” said William Harms, UW-Eau Claire’s NYSP project administrator. “We get tremendous support from the university as well as various community agencies and businesses. It truly is a university-community partnership.”

The NYSP staff includes college students, community members in the field of education and UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff, all of whom go through a lengthy screening process before being hired as staff members. The 2004 program will run from June 10-July 16 at UW-Eau Claire, with registration beginning on March 29.
