Women’s History Month Activities

EAU CLAIRE — In honor of National Women’s
History Month, the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will host a series of
events in March. This year’s theme is “Women Inspiring Hope and
Possibility.” Events are free and open to the public unless otherwise
noted.
March 2
- 8 p.m. — Women’s
Studies faculty reading — featuring poetry and prose by Janice Bogstad,
Kate Hale, Bergine Haakenson, Barbara Kernan, Karen Loeb and Patti See. The
Cabin, Davies Center
March 3
- 4 p.m. — “How
Does She Do It? Making it in the Business World.”
Panel participants include Laura Hopper, Leinenkugel (finance); Cindy Walker,
Nestle (HR-training); Maria Herbert, Firstnet Impressions (entrepreneur, Web
development); Kathy Wright, Country Jam USA (event marketing). Presidents
Room, Davies Center.
- 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.
— “The Words that Bind: Letters of the Schlegelmilch-Barland Women.”
The stories of the Schlegelmilch and Barland women are brought to life through
dramatic readings of this Eau Claire family’s letters and diaries, spanning
many generations. Researched and created by UW-Eau Claire graduate Jackie
Burk. Presented at the Schlegelmilch House. Please call (715) 834-7871 to
reserve a seat.
March 4
- 7 p.m. — “Teaching
through the Storm: One Teacher’s Journal of Hope.” Presentation
by Karen Hale Hankins, author, researcher and classroom teacher. Council Fire
Room, Davies Center. Preceded by a silent auction for the Children’s
Museum at 6:30 p.m.
March 5
- 7-11 p.m. — Benefit
concert for Bolton Refuge House featuring performances by four performers/bands.
Organized by students involved in MOSAIC and the Vagina Monologues presentation.
Beer, wine, and soda will be available for purchase. Admission is $3 with
a Blugold I.D., $5 for the general public. The Council Fire Room, Davies Center.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
March 6
- 6 p.m. — “Dinner
Party” costume party, potluck, musical performances of work by female
composers and musicians, and performances on the lives of Schlegelmilch women
by Jackie Burk. Phillips House, 1615 Park Ave.

Dr. Selika Ducksworth-Lawton and Dr. David Jones. Readings on this theme are
on reserve at the library and on the history and women’s history Web

- 7 p.m. — “Naturally
Native” — Presented by Dr. Jason Tetzloff, “Naturally Native”
is the first film about Native American women written, directed, produced
and starring Native American women. The movie follows the lives, loves, pain,
joy and relationships of three sisters as they attempt to start their own
business. Room 103, Hibbard Hall.
- 8 p.m. — “See
Men Speak” open mike or male forum for men to talk openly about gender
and sexuality. Sponsored by MOSAIC and The Running Water Poetry Slam. 7:30
p.m. registration for men who would like to participate. Racy DeLene’s
Very Coffee Lounge.

Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities. The Wisconsin
Humanities Council supports public programs that engage the people of Wisconsin
in the exploration of human cultures, ideas and values. L.E. Phillips Memorial
Public Library. Reception to follow at the Schlegelmilch House.

Composers Recital. Music majors performing work by female composers. Phillips

- 6:30 p.m. — Alternative
rock/folk concert by Magdalen Hsu-Li, Asian American artist and musician.
Lecture on “Asian American Women in the Arts” to follow. Schofield
Auditorium.
March 18
- Noon — “Women’s
Identity in Contemporary Hmong American Literature” Brown Bag lunch
presentation with Mai Neng Moua, executive director for the Hmong American
Institute for Learning (HAIL), a nonprofit organization whose mission is to
promote and preserve Hmong expressive culture. Moua, editor of the recent
anthology “Bamboo Among the Oaks: Contemporary Writing by Hmong Americans”
will lead a discussion of what Hmong women are writing and how they are defining
themselves. Presidents Room, Davies Center.
- 5 p.m. — A second
presentation by Mai Neng Moua on the same theme, open to the whole Eau Claire
community. The Cabin, Davies Center.
March 25
- 7:30 p.m. — “Samantha
‘Rastles’ the Woman Question” at the Mabel Tainter Theater,
