The Princely Players to Open
Spring Artists Series at UW-Eau Claire

 MAILED:  Feb. 12, 2004

EAU CLAIRE — The Princely Players, an eight-member vocal ensemble from Nashville, will present the songs that galvanized the freedom struggle of Africans in America at its performance Wednesday, Feb. 25, at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Titled “On the Road to Glory,” the Artists Series presentation will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Schofield Auditorium.

“On the Road to Glory” presents the songs of hope and liberation — “Amazing Grace,” “Steal Away,” “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” “We Shall Overcome” and many others — that bound people together in the struggle against slavery and racial discrimination. The centuries-long struggle for freedom by Africans in America stands as an example of the power of the human spirit, a testament that still speaks to oppressed people today.

The Princely Players has guided audiences through the history of Africans in America with their performance of these songs for almost three decades. The ensemble has performed these spirituals, work songs, hymns, and songs of freedom at the Smithsonian, Tennessee Performing Arts Center, Yale University, Ryman Auditorium, and Little Rock’s Festival of Religious Arts, among many others.

The ensemble has been featured on TNN and the BBC and has been heard on National Public Radio’s “Wade in the Water” series and the Time-Life Civil War recordings. The group has collaborated with Ladysmith Black Mambazo and the Nashville Symphony, and members of The Princely Players have recorded with Nashville musicians Randy Travis, Danny O’Keefe and Kathy Mattea.

Admission is $15 for the public, $13 for those 62 and older and UW System or Chippewa Valley Technical College faculty and staff, and $5 for those 17 and younger and UW System or CVTC students. Tickets are available at the University Service Center in Davies Center and will be sold at the door.

Patrons may also charge their tickets to MasterCard or Visa when they order by phone. Call (715) 836-3727 — or, outside the immediate Eau Claire area, call toll-free (800) 949-UWEC. A $3 handling fee will be added to all telephone charge orders.

Funded by the students of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, the Artists Series is administered by the Activities and Programs office of University Centers and Programs.
