UW-Eau Claire Student Wins
National Essay Contest

 MAILED:  Feb. 11, 2004

EAU CLAIRE —University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire junior Katherine Torkelson, Chippewa Falls, was awarded a Mankiw Scholarship by the Thomson Corporation in January.

The Thomson Corporation awards three $500 scholarships to winners of a national essay contest for students studying economics using the “Principles of Economics” text by Greg Mankiw. In a 600-word essay, participants were asked to identify a challenge that today’s economic policy makers face and what they would recommend as a solution. The contest was created as a means to give back to the students and help instructors get them further involved in taking action to make change in society.

Torkelson, who is a pre-pharmacy major and currently works at Walgreens Pharmacy, chose to write her essay on the high cost of prescription drugs and the controversial issue of re-importing drugs from Canada. Her essay “Prescription Drug Prices — A Hard Pill to Swallow?” was one of the three essays chosen for the award.

Torkelson heard about the scholarship contest during her “Principles of Economics” class taught by assistant professor Dr. Eric Jamelske.

"Dr. Jamelske played a huge role in my decision to enter this contest,” Torkelson said. “He provided me with numerous resources, including Web links, newspaper clippings and articles about prescription drugs. It was his enthusiasm and encouragement that really motivated me to pursue this scholarship.”

“I am very excited about winning,” Torkelson said. “My husband Rick is also a full-time student. Having two full-time students in a household makes money really tight, so this scholarship is definitely going to be put to good use.”

“Torkelson deserved to win. She did a great job addressing a very important issue facing our society in the near future,” said Jamelske, adding that this is just another example of a student at UW-Eau Claire pursuing excellence.

The Thomson Corporation, with 2002 revenues of $7.8 billion, provides integrated information solutions to business and professional customers around the world.
