Jabali Afrika to Perform at UW-Eau Claire
As Part of Black History Month Celebration

 MAILED:  Feb. 6, 2004

EAU CLAIRE — As part of the celebration for Black History Month at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Jabali Afrika will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, in Schofield Auditorium.

The Kenyan band has an original sound which its members attribute to their own unique mixture and special fusion of African rhythms. Its members are not only adept at composing songs, playing a variety of instruments and blending their voices into a harmonious sound, but also are talented dancers and choreographers. Original compositions and traditional African melodies come alive on a wide variety of instruments, accompanied by vocal harmonies that form the foundations of modern rock, jazz, gospel, blues and more.

Jabali Afrika tours widely, performing in stunning tribal costumes more than 250 times a year. It has become Kenya’s most successful band, selling more than 70,000 records. Jabali Afrika has toured Europe and Japan extensively and recently made its way to the United States. The band has made appearances on “Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood,” “Good Morning America,” BET and MTV and was a featured guest band on the Marley Magic Tour in honor of the late Bob Marley.

Jabali Afrika’s origins can be traced to the Kenya National Theatre Dance Troupe. After feeling unnecessarily censored and dissatisfied with the repertoire, Joseck Asikoye, Victor Elolo and Justo Otongo left the troupe and started Jabali Afrika. Jabali, which means rock in Kenya’s national language, Kiswahili, was chosen as part of the name because members of the group used to meet on a large rock to discuss the future of their band.

The concert is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the University Activities Commission of the UW-Eau Claire Student Senate. For more information on this and other events sponsored by the UAC, visit their Web site.
