EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire music
and theatre arts department will present the following musical performances
the week beginning Monday, Feb. 16. All events are free and open to the public.
Wednesday, Feb. 18:
- Seniors Jacob Morris, Maple Grove, Minn., and Greg
Van Sickle, Pigeon Falls, will perform a joint trumpet recital at 5 p.m. in
Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Van Sickle will perform
Sonate für Trumpete in B and Klavier by Paul Hindemith and Concert Etude,
Op. 49 by Alexander Goedicke. Lori Cruciani will accompany Van Sickle on piano.
Morris will perform Alexander Arutiunian’s Concerto for Trumpet and
“Rondo for Lifey” by Leonard Bernstein. Kristin Yost will accompany
Morris on piano.
- Flutist William Bennett and pianist Clifford Benson
will perform a guest recital at
7:30 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Bennett is
considered to be one of the foremost flutists performing today. He has held
principal positions with the BBC Northern Orchestra, the Sadler Wells Opera
Co., the London Symphony and Royal Philharmonic, the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields
and the English Chamber Orchestra. The program is subject to change, but will
open tentatively with “Two Hornpipes” and “Two Airs”
by Henry Purcell and continue with “Aus Liebe will mein Heiland Sterben”
from the “St. Matthew Passion” by J. S. Bach; “Romance”
by Antonin Dvorak; and Introductions and Variations Op. 160 by Franz Schubert.
The second half of the program will feature a sonata by Oktar Taktakishvili,
one tango by Niels Gade and another by Benson, and “Jet Whistle”
by Heitor Villa-Lobos. This concert is sponsored by the wind division of the
UW-Eau Claire music department, the Office of Research and Development, the
Academic Affairs Professional Development Program and the Brannen-Cooper Fund.
Sunday, Feb. 22:
- Dr. Phillip Ostrander, assistant professor of music
and theatre arts, will present a faculty trombone recital at 2 p.m. in Gantner
Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. For the first half of the concert, Ostrander
will perform three compositions beginning with Partita, BWV 1013 by J. S.
Bach. Beverly Soll will provide piano accompaniment. The second half of the
concert will open with Dave Springfield’s arrangement of the “Alec
Wilder Suite,” conducted by senior Joe Hartson, Oconomowoc. Ostrander
will be joined on the trombone by seniors Keith Hilson, Eau Claire, and James
Yardley, Duluth, Minn.; juniors Kenyon Scheurman, River Falls, and Colin Gilliland,
Fond du Lac; and sophomore Randall Pingrey, Baraboo. Ostrander also will perform
Dizzy Gillespie’s “Con Alma” and will close the concert
with a composition of his own titled “Line Changes.” Sophomore
Scott Currier, Brookfield, will provide piano accompaniment and Jeremy Schroeder
will assist on bass.
