UW-Eau Claire to Recognize
National TRIO Day

 MAILED:  Feb. 3, 2004

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will recognize National TRIO Day with a program and awards ceremony to be held from 3:45 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17, in Davies Theatre, Davies Center. Awards will be presented to outstanding TRIO students and to UW-Eau Claire staff members who have provided exceptional service for TRIO programs.

TRIO programs are funded by the U.S. Department of Education to promote the academic achievement of students from families of limited income, students whose parents do not have a college degree and students with disabilities. Program participants range in age from sixth-graders to adults.

UW-Eau Claire currently operates four TRIO projects: Upward Bound, Student Support Services, the Educational Opportunity Center and the McNair Program. A fifth TRIO project, Educational Talent Search, is administered by the Eau Claire office of the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.

The TRIO Day activities at UW-Eau Claire will include a keynote address, the reading of a university proclamation, educational sessions for students in attendance and an awards ceremony (beginning at approximately 5:40 p.m.). Staff members from the offices of Sen. Russell Feingold and Rep. Ron Kind will attend in support of the TRIO programs.

The first TRIO programs were established in the 1960s to expand opportunities for students who might otherwise be denied access to a college education. Over 870,000 students are now served each year by 2,600 TRIO projects across the nation.

All members of the community are invited to the National TRIO day activities. For more information, contact Dr. Bruce Ouderkirk, director of Student Support Services, at (715) 836-4542 or
