More than 60 UW-Eau Claire students have participated in a federally-funded program designed to help high-achieving, low-income and underrepresented students pursue careers as professors and researchers by preparing them for doctoral study. The university is in the fifth year of a $941,830 Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program grant, awarded by the U.S. Department of Education to just 156 universities nationwide. McNair Scholars do collaborative research with faculty, publish and present research findings, receive help applying for graduate school, and attend seminars and summer research institutes. UW-Eau Claire’s McNair alumni are enrolled in graduate schools around the country including Okalahoma State, Cornell, University of North Carolina, UW-Madison, University of Florida, Indiana University, Colorado State, University of Kansas and Arizona State. UW-Eau Claire will celebrate Black History Month in February, beginning with a reception from 3:30-6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2, in the Presidents Room of Davies Center. The reception will include a number of displays and posters honoring famous African-Americans. Examples include: a circa 1960s Civil Rights quilt; the African-American mosaic presented by the Library of Congress; posters featuring African-American artists, musicians, athletes, writers and social reformers; and profiles of famous African-Americans.
