Idea
More than 60 UW-Eau Claire students have participated
in a federally-funded program designed to help high-achieving, low-income and
underrepresented students pursue careers as professors and researchers by preparing
them for doctoral study. The university is in the
fifth year of a $941,830 Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program
grant, awarded by the U.S. Department of Education to just 156 universities nationwide.
McNair Scholars do collaborative research with faculty, publish and present research
findings, receive help applying for graduate school, and attend seminars and summer
research institutes. UW-Eau Claire’s McNair alumni are enrolled in graduate
schools around the country including Okalahoma State, Cornell, University of North
Carolina, UW-Madison, University of Florida, Indiana University, Colorado State,
University of Kansas and Arizona State. Others are at the Los Alamos National
Laboratory and serving in the U.S. Peace Corps. Patricia

Story Idea
UW-Eau Claire will celebrate Black History Month in
February, beginning with a reception from 3:30-6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2, in
the Presidents Room of Davies Center. The reception will include a number
of displays and posters honoring famous African-Americans. Examples include:
a circa 1960s Civil Rights quilt; the African-American mosaic presented by the
Library of Congress; posters featuring African-American artists, musicians,
athletes, writers and social reformers; and profiles of famous African-Americans.

UW-Eau Claire’s annual Winter Carnival
will provide several photo opportunities this week on campus. Highlights of
the carnival events include:
- Chili Feed, Central
Campus Mall, lower campus, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday. Activities include building
snow shelters, trying snow shoes and skis, and frozen
Frisbee golf.
- Intramural snow
volleyball, Towers Hall courts, upper campus,
6 p.m.-midnight, Tuesday.
- Dog sledding, behind
Governors Hall, upper campus, 2-4 p.m. Thursday.
- Bonfire, behind Sutherland
Hall, upper campus, 9 p.m., Saturday.
