EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire
will present a three-episode series “Dialogue on Diversity Film: Race
— The Power of an Illusion” as part of Black History Month in February.
The series, which is free to the public, investigates the origins of race and
its effects on society. All three episodes will be shown on the following dates
from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Tamarack Room of Davies Center.
•
Wednesday, Feb. 4: Episode 1 — “The
Difference Between Us” examines contemporary science, including genetics,
that challenges our common sense assumptions that human beings can be bundled
into three or four fundamentally different groups according to their physical
traits.
• Wednesday, Feb. 11: Episode
2 — “The Story We Tell” is an eye-opening tale of how race
served to rationalize, even justify, American social inequalities as “natural.”
•
Wednesday, Feb. 18: Episode 3 — “The
House We Live In” asks “If race is not biology, what is it?”
The episode reveals how our social institutions “make” race by disproportionately
channeling resources, power, status and wealth to white people. It also uncovers
how race resides not in nature, but in politics, economics and culture.
