UW-Eau Claire’s Foster Gallery
Hosts Mixed-Media Painting Exhibit

 MAILED:  Jan. 6, 2004

EAU CLAIRE — The Foster Gallery at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire currently has on exhibit a “one-size fits all” painting.

Measuring 30 feet by 20 feet, the mixed-media painting by Minneapolis artist Gregory Rose was created as part of the fall 2003’s “Bringing Art to Light” show in Eau Claire.

UW-Eau Claire art students Kris Martin and Jay Gould filmed the process of creating the abstract painting during the course of several weeks. They present their video alongside the painting. The painting and video will be on display through Jan. 26 in the gallery.

The canvas first appeared as an enormous wall-sized gray painting created by Chicago artist Galen Gerber for the Foster Gallery’s “Plat and Form” show in 2002. It was then painted maroon and made to serve as a backdrop for several subsequent gallery exhibitions. At the end of the season, the canvas was dismantled and tossed aside for disposal. Artists rescued it for use as an outdoor projection screen to premier the film “Fares” but afterward again readied it for disposal. It was then salvaged for its historical value and surface quality, which is favored by Gregory Rose, an artist who enjoys working on large, unconventional surfaces.
