UW-Eau Claire Student Awarded
Gilman International Study Abroad Scholarship

 MAILED:  Dec. 19, 2003

EAU CLAIRE — University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire sophomore Stacy Grams, Galesville, was recently notified that she has been awarded a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship for study abroad by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State. Grams was one of only 173 students selected to receive awards from a pool of 990 applicants.

The $4,300 scholarship, administered by the Institute of International Education, will allow Grams to study in Mexico Jan. 5-May 18, 2004, through the Instituto Technológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey study abroad program sponsored by UW-Eau Claire.

Grams, who has a comprehensive major in social work and a minor in Spanish, said her mouth literally dropped open when she read the e-mail announcing she had received the award, and she is grateful the award will ease her worries about the financial aspects of the trip.

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to study in Mexico,” said Grams. “I cannot wait to be immersed in the Mexican culture, hopefully achieve fluency in Spanish, and learn a great deal about myself.”

The Gilman Scholarship Program, which uses a competitive selection process, aims to support students who have been traditionally underrepresented in study abroad, including but not limited to students with high financial need, community college students, students in underrepresented fields such as the sciences and engineering, students with diverse ethnic backgrounds or disabilities and students of non-traditional age. Awards of up to $5,000 are made to U.S. citizen undergraduates, and Gilman scholars are encouraged to choose nontraditional destinations, especially those outside of Western Europe and Australia.
