Jayne Blodgett Awarded First in UW-Eau Claire
Distinguished Master’s Thesis Competition

 MAILED:  Dec. 16, 2003

EAU CLAIRE — Jayne R. Blodgett was recently awarded first place in the 2002-03 University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire’s Distinguished Master’s Thesis Competition. Each year, faculty members are invited to nominate exceptional quality theses for this annual competition, with judging provided by the Graduate Council faculty committee. Theses submitted in fall 2002 and spring or summer 2003 were eligible.

Dr. Theresa Kemp, associate professor of English nominated Blodgett’s thesis, “Dirtying ‘The Empty Room’: Escaping Postmodern Nihilism in A.S. Byatt’s ‘Possession.’” In her letter of nomination, Kemp spoke highly of her advisee’s work, including comments indicating that “The thesis is sophisticated and beautifully written…truly a delight to read.”

Blodgett, who graduated from Eau Claire’s Memorial High School and now lives in St. Paul, Minn., will receive a $200 cash award, and her thesis also has been submitted for competition in the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools competition, which awards the winner a $500 honorarium. Results of that competition will be announced in spring 2004.

“I thought getting a master’s degree was reward enough, so this award is really great icing on an already fabulous cake,” said Blodgett, who is currently an editor with West Group, a Thomson business that publishes on-line and print legal research tools.
