UW-Eau Claire Announces Winners
Of Annual Geography Bee

 MAILED:  Dec. 3, 2003

EAU CLAIRE — A record 29 University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire students competed in a Geography Bee as part of the University’s Geography Awareness Week Nov. 17-21.

Participants in the event, which was similar in format to a spelling bee, participated in six preliminary rounds. The top eight finishers from the preliminary rounds went on to compete in the final, double elimination round.

First place was awarded to Chauncy Harris, a geography and history major from Eau Claire. In second place was freshman geology major Cale Anger, Spring Valley. Senior social sciences major Pete Monfre, New Berlin, took third place honors.

The winners received cash prizes of $100, $75 and $50 for first, second and third place, respectively.

The Geography Bee, sponsored by the Geography Club and the Wisconsin Geographic Alliance, is part of the week long campaign to help promote geographic literacy in America. The Geography Awareness Week was created after studies found that many young Americans could not identify simple places on a map and/or were equally lacking in their knowledge of current events.
