Amber Krenz Scholarship
 MAILED:  Nov. 24, 2003

Thanksgiving Day will mark the second anniversary of the death of Amber Star Krenz, a 22-year-old UW-Eau Claire student who died Nov. 27, 2001, from complications related to meningococcal disease.

In December 2002, Krenz’s mother created a scholarship fund at UW-Eau Claire to honor her daughter’s memory. Less than a year later, the fund already has reached an endowed (permanently funded) level.

Beginning in spring 2004, the $500 Amber Star Krenz Memorial Scholarship will be awarded each year to a student majoring in environmental and public health who also plans to study abroad for a semester. Krenz, an environmental and public health major, had planned to study in Australia during the 2002 spring semester.

More than 100 donors from at least 12 states contributed to the Amber Star Krenz Memorial Scholarship. Donations came from family and friends, as well as from people who were moved by stories about Krenz’s life and her untimely death.

Donations recently topped $10,500, enabling the UW-Eau Claire Foundation to begin funding the scholarship to help current students who share Krenz’s dreams.

Krenz’s mother, Sheila Wright of Eau Claire, is willing to talk with the media about her daughter and the scholarship fund. You can reach Sheila Wright at (715) 878-4752.
