Minnesota High School Students Tour
Math and Science Facilities at UW-Eau Claire

 MAILED:  Nov. 18, 2003

EAU CLAIRE — Fifty-six high school students from Brooklyn Park, Minn., traveled to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Oct. 27 to meet with faculty in the mathematics, computer science, biology, physics and astronomy, chemistry and geology departments and to tour the facilities. The students, from Patrick Henry and Park Center High Schools, all have strong abilities and interest in mathematics and science.

“UW-Eau Claire is one of the top schools in this area for undergraduate math and science,” said Ed Dillon, mathematics program director at Park Center High school, who accompanied the students. “The students were really impressed by the facilities that would be available to them and the opportunities to work directly with the faculty. They won’t have to wait until they’re graduate students to do real research,” Dillon said.

“I thought the visit was great,” said Tyler Johnson, a student from Park Center High School. “I got to see some of the classes offered and sit in some while the classes were in session.”

According to Johnson, he hadn’t experienced this kind of tour when he visited other campuses, and because of it, he decided to enroll at UW-Eau Claire.

“This trip was important to me and to other students. It showed us what a college education is like. It was wonderful to be a part of this visit,” Johnson said.

The visit was sponsored by the Excellence in Mathematics and Computer Science program at UW-Eau Claire, which is funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation.
