UW-Eau Claire Alumnus Wins Prestigious Teaching Award
 MAILED:  Nov. 6, 2003

A 1987 UW-Eau Claire graduate is the winner of the prestigious Milken Educator Award.

James Doucette, a history and law teacher at Franklin High School, received the $25,000 teaching award during a surprise announcement at his school earlier in October. He was one of 100 teachers from 47 states to receive the award.

Doucette, a social studies major when at UW-Eau Claire, was recognized for combining a humorous and innovative instructional style with high academic standards. He’s a leader in his school and in his district, serving on numerous committees and mentoring young teachers.

Wisconsin First Lady Jessica Doyle and Wisconsin Superintendent of Public Instruction Elizabeth Burmaster were among the dignitaries on hand to present Doucette with his award.

The Milken Family Foundation National Educator Awards program provides public recognition and financial rewards to elementary and secondary school teachers, principals and other education professionals who are furthering excellence in education. By honoring outstanding educators, the program strives to attract, retain and motivate talented people to teaching.

Doucette’s UW-Eau Claire adviser was Dr. Elmer Winters, an emeritus faculty member known for his work in the areas of social studies and law-related education. Winters and Doucette have stayed in touch. Winters is available to provide comments about Doucette and the award.

Winters, a 1951 UW-Eau Claire graduate, was inducted this fall into the UW-Eau Claire Alumni Hall of Honor for the College of Professional Studies.

“It’s an interesting twist that a retired adviser and his advisee were both recognized in the same month for their outstanding work as educators,” said Mark Clark, dean of the College of Professional Studies. “It demonstrates the quality of people — alumni, faculty and students — associated with the School of Education at UW-Eau Claire.”

For details about James Doucette and the Milken educator awards program, see their Web site. There are several photos of Doucette on the site.
