University Police Investigate
Alleged Attack on Campus

 MAILED:  Nov. 6, 2003

EAU CLAIRE — A 19-year-old University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire student reported to University Police that she was attacked by a man with a knife Wednesday night behind Governors Hall on upper campus. The alleged assault took place at approximately 8 p.m.

University Police are continuing their investigation this morning, said David Backstrom, chief of police at UW-Eau Claire.

The woman told police she was walking behind Governors Hall when she noticed a man sitting on the ground, Backstrom said. The man told the woman that he was injured and needed help. When the woman approached the man, he pulled a knife out and threatened her. The woman told police she fought the man off and used her cell phone to call her roommate for help. The roommate and friends then called 911, according to police.

When University Police arrived, the woman was hyperventilating but did not appear to be injured. She was taken to Sacred Heart Hospital, Backstrom said.

Police found a knife at the scene of the alleged attack.

The woman described the man as a college-age white male who is approximately 6 feet tall with broad shoulders and a thin build. She said he was wearing a black T-shirt, red shorts, a dark stocking hat and gloves.

If anyone has information relating to the alleged attempted assault, contact University Police at (715) 836-2102.
