UW-Eau Claire Dancers to Present
‘Tap Fusion’ All-tap Concert

 MAILED:  Nov. 4, 2003

EAU CLAIRE —Dr. Toni Poll-Sorensen’s Tap Studio at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will present “Tap Fusion,” an all-tap concert, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

The concert is a result of a collaborative research project by senior Anna-Lisa Bjorklund, Lindstrom, Minn., and Poll-Sorensen and is sponsored by the UW-Eau Claire Summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program.

The Tap Studio will perform nine pieces, taking the audience on an historical tour that includes some of the early dance styles that influenced tap, such as the Irish jig, Appalachian clogging and buck dancing. The dancers will continue through the various decades of the 20th century, from the buck and wing of the early 1900s, to rhythm and acrobatic tap of the 1920s and ’30s, to today’s hip-hop funk or power tap. At the end of the concert, tappers in the audience will be invited to join the dancers on stage to perform the Shim Sham, known as the national anthem for tap dancers.

“Tap Fusion” will feature more than 20 dancers. Student choreographers for the concert include Bjorklund; sophomore Serena Davis, St. Paul, Minn.; and senior Kristin Marie Warner, Eagan, Minn.

Tickets, available at the University Service Center, are $6 for the public; $5 for UW-Eau Claire students, faculty and staff; $4 for those 62 and older; and $3 for those 17 and younger. Call (715) 836-3727 for more information.
