Hmong New Year’s Celebration
To be Held at UW-Eau Claire

 MAILED:  Oct. 31, 2003

EAU CLAIRE — The Hmong Mutual Assistance Association and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will sponsor a Hmong New Year’s celebration Saturday, Nov. 15, and Sunday, Nov. 16, at the McPhee Physical Education Center.

Faculty, staff, students and community members are invited to share in the festivities, which will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. There also will be a dance on Saturday night beginning at 6 p.m.

“We hope members of the community will attend the event,” said Charles Vue, Hmong and Southeast Asian program coordinator. “This will be an opportunity for them to socialize and learn a lot more about our culture.”

Scheduled events include traditional Hmong ball tossing and cultural shows featuring traditional dance performances, folk songs, crafts and food vendors.

The traditional ball tossing, called Pov Pob, is a form of courtship. If a participant drops the ball he or she must give a “gift” to a partner. Once all possessions have been given away the participant may sing several songs to get his or her possessions back.

The celebration on campus is only one of three parts to the Hmong New Year. Hmong families throughout the community will invite friends and family to share in feasts. Hmong community members also will gather to cast away the old year and bad luck and invite the new year with good luck and prosperity.

“For the older generations, this is a time to remember they are Hmong through celebrating their heritage, clothing and cultural performance,” said Vue. “For the youth, this is a time to value Hmong social gatherings and to see friends and make new ones.”

Tickets are available through the Hmong Mutual Assistance Association and at the door. Admission to the day programs is $2 and tickets to the dance are $8 in advance or $10 at the door.
