Eau Claire Native/UW-Eau Claire Alumnus Selected for Institute of Medicine
 MAILED:  Oct. 30, 2003

An Eau Claire native and UW-Eau Claire graduate is among the 65 newly elected members of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies.

Dr. James Anderson, a professor of pathology, macromolecular science and biomedical engineering at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio, was elected into the prestigious Institute of Medicine this fall.

A 1963 UW-Eau Claire chemistry graduate, Dr. Anderson earned his Ph.D. from Oregon State University and his doctor of medicine degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

Dr. Anderson continues to be involved with UW-Eau Claire, serving as a member of the UW-Eau Claire Foundation Board of Directors. With family in Eau Claire, he visits the Chippewa Valley regularly.

Established in 1970 by the National Academy of Sciences, the Institute of medicine is recognized as a national resource for independent, scientifically informed analysis and recommendations on issues related to human health.

When elected to IOM, members make a commitment to devote a significant amount of time to volunteer as members of IOM committees, which are involved in a range of studies on health policy issues.

Examples of current Institute projects include: a review of the current state of knowledge and policy regarding spinal cord injury; a study to assess the factors responsible for the epidemic of obesity in children, and to develop an action plan to decrease its prevalence; and a project examining how to address the public’s lack of “health literacy.”

The UW-Eau Claire Foundation has a photo of Dr. Anderson that it is willing to share with the media. Please contact the News Bureau, (715) 836-4741, if you’re interested.
