Starts Season on a High Note

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire forensics team began its competitive season by traveling to the Mid-American Forensic League Opening Swing Tournament hosted by Northern Illinois University on Saturday, Oct. 4, and by North Central College on Sunday, Oct. 5. Both tournaments were held on the NIU campus in Dekalb, Ill. UW-Eau Claire took second place at the first MAFL tournament and third place at the second MAFL tournament.

Following are the individual results from Saturday’s MAFL tournament:

Junior Kelly Marie Bender, New London, took first place in persuasive speaking and sixth place in prose interpretation.

Sophomore Dan McNeely, Bloomington, Minn., placed second in poetry interpretation, third in informative speaking, and fifth in duo interpretation along with junior Andy Bevernitz, Clintonville, who also placed third in after-dinner speaking.

Junior Mandy Dolan, Greenfield, placed second in informative speaking.

Junior Chris Conklin, Green Bay, placed third in extemporaneous speaking and sixth in after-dinner speaking.

Freshman Andy Wilkins, Lakeville, Minn., placed third in novice impromptu speaking.

Senior Brandon Buchanan, Chippewa Falls, took fifth place in informative speaking.

Sophomore Betsy Schroeder, Le Center, Minn., placed sixth in persuasive speaking.

Following are the individual results from Sunday’s second MAFL tournament:

Bender took first place in both persuasive and informative speaking.

Freshman Ken Dungar, Oshkosh, placed second in novice impromptu speaking.

Bevernitz placed third in after-dinner speaking and fourth in duo interpretation along with McNeely, who also took third in poetry interpretation.

Buchanan took fourth in extemporaneous speaking and seventh in informative speaking.

Conklin took fifth in both extemporaneous and after-dinner speaking.

Dolan took fifth in informative speaking.

Wilkins placed sixth in novice impromptu speaking.

The team will compete next in Winona, Minn.
