UW System “Legacy Scholars Program”
 MAILED:  Oct. 6, 2003

UW-Eau Claire is one of three institutions proposing a pilot program that would offer discounts in out-of-state tuition to children and grandchildren of alumni, commonly known as legacy students, who live outside Wisconsin and Minnesota.

The UW System Board of Regents will review the “Legacy Scholars Program” proposal at its Oct. 9-10 meetings in Oshkosh. The Regents will not act on the proposal during this meeting. It will go back to the Board of Regents for action at its November meeting.

UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse and UW-Oshkosh are jointly presenting the pilot proposal.

The proposal stipulates that legacy students would not displace Wisconsin residents. Rather, they would be students accepted above the university’s target enrollment number. Legacy students would meet the same university admission requirements as all other students.

The “Legacy Scholars Program” benefits include:

Under the proposal, legacy students would pay 25 percent less in tuition than other out-of-state students. The reduced tuition would cover the full costs of the student’s education. For example, for the 2003-04 academic year, a Wisconsin resident would pay $3,500 in tuition, a non-resident student would pay $13,546 in tuition and a legacy student would pay $10,160 in tuition.

Legacy students would continue to pay all other fees, room and board at rates equal to other students. Students could continue in the program so long as they remain in good academic standing.

If approved by the Regents this fall, the “Legacy Scholars Program” will begin with the 2004 fall semester. It will run for three years after which the UW System administrators would review its success and make new recommendations to the Board of Regents.

Chancellor Donald Mash is available to discuss the proposal with the media. You can reach Chancellor Mash at (715) 836-2327.
