Annual School Journalism Conference
To be Held at UW-Eau Claire Oct. 15

 MAILED:  Oct. 1, 2003

EAU CLAIRE —The 54th Annual Chippewa Valley School Press Association Fall Journalism Conference will be held from 9:15 a.m. to 2:35 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Approximately 500 middle and high school students and advisers involved in school newspapers, yearbooks and literary or art magazines will attend this year’s conference, which will focus on various aspects of journalism ranging from newspaper editing to journalism ethics.

“Our ultimate goal is to help these students become better journalists,” said La Vone Sneen, program assistant, UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education.

Journalism instructors, professional photographers, area print and television news professionals and yearbook company representatives will lead the three workshops held throughout the day.

Yearbook and newspaper competitions also will be held on the spot, with one student staff person per school eligible to enter. Yearbook contestants will use information provided and photocopies of pictures to create a two-page spread that will be judged on photo selection and cropping, copy, headline and caption writing, and overall layout and design. Newspaper contestants will be introduced to an interview subject and hear a statement about him. The contestants will have the opportunity to interview the subject during a mock press conference and then write a feature story on that person.

The conference fee is $8.50 for each student and adviser from C.V.S.P.A. member schools. C.V.S.P.A. memberships are $50.

UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education, UW-Extension and the C.V.S.P.A. are sponsoring the conference.
