Speaker to Visit Campus to Discuss
Alcohol Use Among College Students

 MAILED:  Oct. 1, 2003

EAU CLAIRE — A nationally known speaker on alcohol-related issues on college campuses will give a presentation Oct. 15 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire as part of National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week, which runs Oct. 12-19.

Carolyn Cornelison’s “Courage to Care” presentation will begin at 7 p.m. in Schofield Auditorium. The session is free and open to the public.

During her presentation, Cornelison will use her knowledge and personal experiences to take a realistic look at college drinking, taking responsibility, recognizing abuse and helping those with alcohol problems.

Using stories about her experiences as a sorority member and athlete, Cornelison will touch on three keys to caring:

Among the stories she will share is a 1990 call she made to a college friend to tell her of a drunk driving accident involving a fellow sorority sister. When told of the accident, her friend said, “We always thought it would be you.” She realized then that even in college she had a problem with alcohol but that no one confronted her about it. She’s since spoken to students on more than 350 college campuses.

Cornelison has served as director of special programs for the Boost Alcohol Consciousness Concerning the Health of University Students and Greeks Advocating the Mature Management of Alcohol Peer Education Network. She also was director of the Campus Alcohol and Drug Information Center at Florida State University from 1988-1991.

At 3 p.m. on Oct. 15, Cornelison will lead a training session for UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff in the Presidents Room of Davies Center.

Cornelison’s visit will be sponsored by Park Ridge Distributing Inc.
