UW-Eau Claire to Celebrate Archives Week
With Norwegian Exhibit and Presentation

 MAILED:  Sept. 26, 2003

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will celebrate Archives Week in Wisconsin, Oct.12-18, with an exhibit and public presentation related to “Immigrant Wisconsin,” this year’s statewide theme. The exhibit and presentation will highlight Norwegian immigrants who came to Eau Claire.

“Norwegians in Eau Claire” will be on display in the Grand Corridor of McIntyre Library and will feature a map of the city and the location of various Norwegian neighborhoods, churches, schools, stores and organizations throughout the years. The exhibit will run Oct. 1-31 and is open to the public 7 a.m.-1 a.m. Monday-Thursday, 7 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m.-1 a.m. Sunday.

At 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, university archivist Heather Muir, head of Special Collections, will present “Norwegians in Eau Claire: the Story of Two Local Families and their Norwegian Roots.”

Muir, who has a master’s degree in Scandinavian area studies and specializes in Norwegian immigrant history, recently helped one local family trace its Norwegian roots using historic records in Special Collections and on the Internet. While in Norway this summer, Muir said she was able to do more research in an Oslo area archives as well as visit the family’s churches and farm. Her presentation will describe the genealogical sources used.

The second story revolves around a family heirloom — a gold watch that was given to a pastor of the local Scandinavian Evangelical Lutheran Church.

The free presentation will take place in McIntyre Library, L2023A, and is open to the general public. Refreshments will be served.
