First Fridays Programs to Begin
With Oct. 3 Concert

 MAILED:  Sept. 22, 2003

EAU CLAIRE — An Oct. 3 recital for brass and piano will kick off the First Fridays colloquium for senior citizens this season.

University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire faculty member Andrew Parks (French horn), professor emeritus Rodney Hudson (trombone), and arts manager Beverly Soll (piano) will perform a program of French and American music. A free continental breakfast will precede the formal program. Doors open for breakfast at 8:30 a.m., and the program begins at 9 a.m. in the Memorial Lounge at Christ Church Cathedral (corner of Lake and Farwell in downtown Eau Claire).

Last year UW-Eau Claire’s Activities and Programs office and Christ Church Cathedral teamed up to present a new monthly program for senior citizens. The program attracted attention in the downtown arts community and received grant support from the Downtown Eau Claire Business Improvement District and the Eau Claire Regional Arts Council, as well as from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Foundation Community Outreach Program for the Arts.

First Fridays programs occur on the first Friday of each month October through May, with the exception of January, at no cost to the senior community. Each session will feature a university or community presenter. In addition to concerts, planned programs include presentations on World War II, the history of public radio in Wisconsin, Shakespeare and his plays, and the Dead Sea scrolls.

The complete schedule for the fall follows:

Modeled on a similar successful program at Wayne State College in Nebraska, First Fridays is coordinated by Beverly Soll and Jennifer Hinners of UW-Eau Claire and Scott and Heather Kirby of Christ Church Cathedral. The mission of First Fridays is to provide no-cost entertainment and educational experiences for senior citizens of the extended Chippewa Valley community through shared community and university sponsorship.
