UW-Eau Claire Trumpet Conference
To End with Exciting Concert

 MAILED:  Sept. 19, 2003

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Trumpet Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble I will present a concert featuring guest artists and trumpet greats Bob Platt and Charley Davis on Saturday, Oct. 4, in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

The concert, which will begin at 7:30 p.m. with Platt and the Trumpet Ensemble, followed by Davis and Jazz I at 8 p.m., is being held in conjunction with UW-Eau Claire’s first annual Trumpet Conference. In addition to Platt and Davis, the conference will feature William Adam, one of the world’s foremost trumpet pedagogues, and UW-Eau Claire’s own Bob Baca. Clinics and master classes on jazz performance, orchestral performance and trumpet pedagogy issues will begin Friday, Oct. 3, and continue through Saturday, culminating with the conference concert Saturday evening.

“It is rare to be able to hear three forces like this,” said Nicole Lalond, assistant conference coordinator, referring to Platt, Davis and Jazz I. “There will be music for classical and jazz fans alike,” she said, noting that she hopes all music lovers will attend the concert but believes area music students would particularly benefit from the chance to hear such accomplished performers.

Platt, former trumpet for the Berlin Philharmonic, is one of the world’s foremost orchestral musicians. He was recently featured in “An Inside Look at Orchestral Trumpet Playing,” a video produced by the University of Alaska-Fairbanks.

Davis is currently on faculty at California State University-Long Beach, Citrus College and the Henry Mancini Institute. He has performed on trumpet with Buddy Rich, Woody Herman, Frank Sinatra and Placido Domingo.

UW-Eau Claire’s Jazz Ensemble I has won Down Beat magazine’s “Best College Big Band” award five times in the last seven years. The group also has recorded eleven CDs in the last ten years.

Tickets are $8 at the University Service Center, (715) 836-3727 or 1-800-949-UWEC.
