Political Humorist P.J. O’Rourke
To Open The Forum at UW-Eau Claire

 MAILED:  Sept. 8, 2003

EAU CLAIRE — Humorist, journalist and political commentator P.J. O’Rourke will open the 62nd season of The Forum at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Wednesday, Sept. 17.

“The Politics of Worry — Government vs. the Free Market: Which is Worse?” is the title of his presentation, which will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Zorn Arena. O’Rourke’s lecture will be followed by a question-and-answer session and a reception.

With more citations in The Penguin Dictionary of Humorous Quotations than any other living writer, P.J. O’Rourke has established himself as America’s premier political satirist. The most entertaining guide an audience will find to national and world affairs, O’Rourke has been called “one of the funniest writers in America” by Time magazine and “the funniest writer alive” by The Wall Street Journal.

A former editor of National Lampoon, O’Rourke has written for such diverse publications as Automobile, The Weekly Standard, House and Garden, Foreign Policy, The New York Times Book Review, Forbes FYI and Rolling Stone. He is currently a regular correspondent for The Atlantic Monthly.

He is the author of several books of reportage and political satire including “The CEO of the Sofa” (2001), “All the Trouble in the World: The Lighter Side of Overpopulation, Famine, Ecological Disaster, Ethnic Hatred, Plague, and Poverty” (1995), “Give War A Chance: Eyewitness Accounts of Mankind’s Struggle Against Tyranny, Injustice, and Alcohol-Free Beer” (1993), and “Parliament of Whores: A Lone Humorist Attempts to Explain the Entire U.S. Government “ (1991).

Admission is $7 for the public, $5 for those 62 and older and UW System or Chippewa Valley Technical College faculty and staff, or $3 for those 17 and younger and UW System or CVTC students. Tickets are available at the University Service Center in Davies Center and will be sold at the door.

Patrons may also charge their tickets to MasterCard or Visa when they order by phone. Call the University Service Center, (715) 836-3727 — or, outside the immediate Eau Claire area, call toll-free (800) 949-UWEC. A $3 handling fee will be added to all telephone charge orders.

Season subscription information is also available at the Service Center. A range of subscription packages is available, offering discounts of 10 to 20 percent.

The Forum is funded by the students of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and administered by the Activities and Programs office of University Centers and Programs.
