Michael Cunningham Earns
National Recognition

 MAILED:  Aug. 29, 2003

EAU CLAIRE — Michael Cunningham, professor of music and theater arts at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, received an award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

The ASCAP Awards are based on the “unique prestige value of each writer’s catalog of original compositions, as well as recent performances in areas not surveyed by the Society,” said Marilyn Bergman, president and chairman of the board of ASCAP. Recipients are selected by an independent panel made up of journalists, musicians and faculty from throughout the country.

Cunningham joined UW-Eau Claire’s faculty in 1973. He’s taught in the areas of music theory, 20th century techniques, form and analysis, orchestration, counterpoint, electronic music and applied composition.

He’s published the theory text “The Inner World of Traditional Harmony,” and is the creator of five other books used in his teaching. Cunningham has written 180 compositions for nearly every medium.

Cunningham has performed in 20 states in the United States, as well as in Europe, Japan and Australia.
