P. J. O'Rourke to Open
Forum Series at UW-Eau Claire

 MAILED:  Aug. 12, 2003

EAU CLAIRE - Political satirist P.J. O'Rourke will open the 62nd season of The Forum at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Wednesday, Sept. 17. His presentation, "The Politics of Worry - Government vs. the Free Market: Which is Worse?" will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Zorn Arena.

With more than a million words of trenchant journalism under his byline and more citations in The Penguin Dictionary of Humorous Quotations than any other living writer, P.J. O'Rourke has established himself as one of the funniest speakers in America. He is the best-selling author of ten books, including "Parliament of Whores," "Give War a Chance," "Eat the Rich" and "The CEO of the Sofa." Whether dealing with the inner workings of Washington, the shifting political sands of the new world order, or his own living room, O'Rourke is a savvy guide to national and world affairs.

Known as a hard-bitten, cigar-smoking conservative, O'Rourke actually bashes all political persuasions. "Giving money and power to government is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys," he says.

All Forum events begin at 7:30 p.m. A typical program includes a 60-minute lecture, a 30-minute question-and-answer session, and an open reception. Believed to be the oldest such continuous program in the United States, The Forum has since 1942 provided intellectually compelling and engaging programs to challenge and entertain the Eau Claire community. This season's programming covers the gamut of political satire, theoretical physics, cultural history, societal change and environmental issues.

Descriptions of The Forum season's other presentations follow:

"The Forum has come to a point at which its patrons can count on a positive experience, even if they know nothing about the speaker before attending," said Dean Kallenbach, Wisconsin Public Radio's Eau Claire area regional manager. "That trust, built on past positive experiences, is a precious commodity and will serve the series well for years to come."

Season subscription information is available at the University Service Center, (715) 836-3727. Tickets for individual Forum events are $7 for the public, $5 for those 62 and older and UW System or Chippewa Valley Technical College faculty and staff, and $3 for those 17 and younger and UW System or CVTC students.

Patrons may also charge their tickets to MasterCard or Visa when they order by phone. Call (715) 836-3727 - or, outside the immediate Eau Claire area, call toll-free (800) 949-UWEC. A $3 handling fee will be added to all telephone charge orders.

Funded by the students of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, The Forum is administered by the Activities and Programs office.
