Hmong Youth to Participate
In Leadership Program at UW-Eau Claire

 MAILED:  July 15, 2003

EAU CLAIRE - Forty Hmong youth will work on their English writing, computer, science and Hmong language skills during a two-week leadership program this month at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Hmong youth in grades 7-11 from throughout Wisconsin will meet on the UW-Eau Claire campus for the "Hmong Youth Leadership: Pre-college Program" July 20-Aug.3.

Participants will develop their English grammar skills by learning and writing about Hmong leaders. They will learn about leadership qualities by reading Hmong literature and interacting with instructors.

The program will feature presentations on Hmong culture and music, dating, education, and politics by a variety of Hmong speakers, including Kaying Xiong, principal of Eau Claire's Locust Lane Elementary School and the first Hmong principal in Wisconsin. Other activities will include games, sports, movies and field trips.

The program also introduces participants to a college environment and allows them to interact with UW-Eau Claire faculty, staff and students.

For more information, call Charles Vue, UW-Eau Claire's Hmong/Southeast Asian student services coordinator, at (715) 836-3367.
