Irene Keenan Jr. Band to Highlight
Summer Session Week of July 14

 MAILED:  July 3, 2003

EAU CLAIRE - A free outdoor show by the Irene Keenan Jr. Band will highlight the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Summer Session Programs for the week of July 14.

The concert will begin Monday at 7 p.m. on the Central Campus Mall (rain: Schofield Auditorium). Refreshments will be sold. Audience members are invited to bring blankets or folding chairs for lawn seating.

Of Irish and Native American descent, Irene Keenan Jr. grew up in both worlds and feels a kinship to the rhythms of both cultures. As a member of The Wails, she opened for many blues legends and rock acts. When that group disbanded she joined a hard-rock cover band from Indianapolis, toured the west-central U.S., and made a 33-day tour of China. After a brief learning experience as a rhythm guitarist in Los Angeles, Keenan returned to Wisconsin to refuel, sing and play with a variety of bands. After Clyde Stubblefield opened the door to funk rhythms and grooves, Keenan found her own sound - as well as a drummer and bass player who help her create it.

Also on campus, the Summer Cinema series will present "Risky Business" (1983) Tuesday and Thursday at noon and 7 p.m. in Davies Theatre.

When an affluent 17-year-old (Tom Cruise) is left in charge of his family's mansion, he turns it into a lucrative brothel. Rebecca DeMornay costars as the prostitute who becomes his business partner. Newsweek call this "a fresh, hypnotic and very sexy movie... A dreamlike version of a boy's sexual awakening, and like a dream it can tip unexpectedly from frolic to fever to nightmare."

The 96-minute color film is rated R. Admission is free.

Summer Session Programs continue through July. A complete schedule is available from the Activities and Programs office, Davies Center 133, (715) 836-4833.
