Bernard Duyfhuizen Named Interim Dean
Of the College of Arts and Sciences

 MAILED:  July 2, 2003

EAU CLAIRE - Bernard "Duffy" Duyfhuizen has been appointed interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Provost and Vice Chancellor Ron Satz announced today.

Duyfhuizen will assume his new responsibilities Aug. 3 upon the departure of Dean Ted Wendt, who has accepted a position as associate vice president for faculty affairs at California State University-Stanislaus.

The appointment follows consultation during a series of meetings Satz held with department chairs and associate deans in the College of Arts and Sciences.

"Dr. Duyfhuizen is the most senior member of the College of Arts and Sciences leadership team and his associate dean duties are the most congruent with the college dean's primary responsibilities," Satz said.

Based on suggestions received during meetings, Satz said a part-time administrator, possibly a retired department chair, will be hired to assist Duyfhuizen with personnel and other matters.

In order to enhance communication within the college and promote strategic planning, Duyfhuizen, and Associate Deans Margaret Cassidy and Wilma Clark, will each serve as a liaison to specific departments and share information with other leadership team members.

"I recognize it will be a challenging year, especially recruiting new faculty and providing course selections given the budget reductions the college and university are experiencing," Duyfhuizen said. "However, our leadership group has been together for a number of years and that has provided us with the background to operate effectively and efficiently."

Duyfhuizen has been associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences since 1999 and previously served as assistant dean and as chair of the English department. He joined UW-Eau Claire as an assistant professor of English in 1984 and was promoted to full professor in 1992.
