More than 600 boys and girls ages 10 to 16 are participating in UW-Eau Claire's nationally recognized National Youth Sports Program this summer. The free program, which runs through July18, provides area young people with both academic and sports training. It offers sports competition (ranging from tennis to basketball to the climbing wall) to improve physical fitness and health habits, and it allows participants to learn about career and educational opportunities while on a college campus. Sessions run from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday this week (no sessions Thursday and Friday this week because of the Fourth of July holiday). This is the 23rd year UW-Eau Claire has hosted the program. The university's program has been recognized 11 times since 1988 as one of the best of the 200 NYSP programs in the country. For details about the NYSP program or schedule of activities, contact Lisa Mc Intyre, activities director of NYSP and women's gymnastics coach, at (715) 836-3991 or mcintyli@uwec.edu.

Two UW-Eau Claire students will host their first weeklong Spanish Summer Camp this week. The student teachers will teach Eau Claire area children ages 5-10 to speak Spanish. Valerie Mumm and Lee Ann Pignet, both senior Spanish education majors, started the camp to give area children an opportunity to learn a language and to raise public awareness about the importance of having language education available for elementary-age students. The students are planning to involve the children in numerous activities designed to make learning Spanish fun. The camps are being offered in three weeklong sessions, with the first session running this week, June 30-July 3. Sessions also will be offered July 7-11 and July 14-18. The camps will run from 8-11 a.m. each day in the Children's Museum of Eau Claire in downtown Eau Claire. For more information, call (715) 855-4423 or (715) 855-4115.
