EAU CLAIRE - The second annual SmArt program, a summer art program for middle and high school students offered by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Continuing Education/UW Extension, has limited space available.

The program will be run July 14-24 at UW-Eau Claire. Classes are 9:30-11:30 a.m. or 12:30-2:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

SmArt emphasizes hands-on experiences in a variety of art disciplines. Students may choose from six courses:

• "Fine Art of Silk-Screen Printing," where students learn to transfer designs to a screen and make prints suitable for framing;
• "Advanced Jewelry Making," where advanced students construct an original sterling silver ring containing a cabochon stone;
• "Build Forms with Fibers," where students explore the magic of transforming everyday materials into sculptures;
• "Picturing War and Peace," where students learn painting skills and use contemporary newspaper images related to war and peace as inspiration;
• "Guerilla Publishing," where students design flyers, shirts, decals and publications to express their own opinions on world ideas;
• "The Little People," where students use a fantasy theme and installation sculpture using clay and other materials to create an imaginary civilization.

Tuition is $65 per class, plus a $20 materials fee. Eau Claire residents can waive tuition for one class per child; Chippewa Falls' residents can waive tuition for two classes. Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis. Classes fill quickly.
