UW-Eau Claire Spring Telefund Drive
Generates Record Support

 MAILED:  May 30, 2003

EAU CLAIRE - The generosity of alumni and friends of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire reached an all-time high during the UW-Eau Claire Foundation's spring 2003 Telefund drive.

The spring drive, which ended in early May, generated $297,347 in pledges and matching gifts for the university's people and programs, resulting in a Telefund total of $482,665 for the 2002-03 fiscal year. By comparison, 2001-02 Telefund gifts totaled just over $423,000.

The spring Telefund total included a matching gift of $10,000 from David G. and Carol Anderson of Eau Claire. The gift matched first-time Telefund gifts of $75 or more and a portion of renewal gifts that were upgraded to $75 or more.

"We are grateful to the Andersons for their role in the success of the spring Telefund drive," said Heidi Fisher, the UW-Eau Claire Foundation's director of annual giving and donor relations. "This was truly an instance of leading by example, and many of our alumni and friends followed that lead by making first-time gifts or increasing their annual gift amounts."

The Telefund drive has been held twice a year for the past 23 years. Money raised through Telefund is used by the Foundation to support student scholarships, student/faculty research projects, faculty development initiatives, international study opportunities and other special projects that enhance teaching and learning at the university, said Carole Halberg, UW-Eau Claire Foundation president.

"The Telefund generates support for critical programs and activities that are UW-Eau Claire's marks of excellence," Halberg said. "In the state's current fiscal climate, annual support through Telefund is more important than ever, and it's heartening to see that our alumni and friends are committed to supporting excellence at UW-Eau Claire."

The Andersons' matching gift, as well as all donations to the Telefund effort, are recognized as contributions to UW-Eau Claire's Fulfilling the Promise of Excellence campaign, part of the university's effort to progress toward its long-term goals in spite of fiscal challenges resulting from the state budget crisis. The campaign, which had secured $25 million in gifts and commitments as of April 25, seeks $35 million in private support by July 2005 for UW-Eau Claire's people and programs.
