UW-Eau Claire Sophomore
Wins Music Scholarship

 MAILED:  May 30, 2003

EAU CLAIRE - Yukiko Fujimura, a sophomore piano student at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, was recently awarded a $1,000 second prize at the 2003 Schubert Club Scholarship Competition at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn.

The Schubert Club Competition, held every April, awards about $35,000 annually to young musicians. Two cash prizes ranging from $750 to $2,000 are awarded in each age and instrument category. Instrument categories are piano, organ, strings, brass, woodwinds, guitar and voice. The piano division, which Fujimura competed in, includes separate age categories for junior high, senior high, college and graduate students.

The college piano competition required participants to prepare, from memory, four contrasting selections, each chosen from a different one of the following classifications: Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic or music from composers born after 1880.

Fujimura, who competed in a preliminary round at St. Paul's Macalester College prior to the final round at Hamline University, performed the Allemande from J.S. Bach's French Suite no. 5, in G Major; the first movement of Beethoven's Sonata op. 57, in f minor; Etude in f minor by Franz Liszt; and the third movement of Prokoviev's Piano Sonata no. 7.

Dr. Alexandre Dossin, assistant professor of piano and Fujimura's instructor since he first came to UW-Eau Claire in August 2002, said he was very pleased with her performance and the award was indeed an important one, not only for her, but for the whole music department.

"Yukiko has been an extraordinary student," said Dossin, "and this was only her first performance in a competition; many more will come, and we all will be wishing her the best of luck."
