UW-Eau Claire Names Associate Dean
For the School of Education

 MAILED:  May 12, 2003

EAU CLAIRE - Dr. Katherine Rhoades has been named associate dean of the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Rhoades has been interim associate dean since July 2002. Provost Ronald Satz announced May 9 that, upon the recommendation of College of Professional Studies Dean Mark Clark, Rhoades will become the associate dean of the School of Education beginning July 1.

"Katherine Rhoades has proven to be an effective leader in the School of Education," Satz said of the appointment. "Under her guidance, I am confident that UW-Eau Claire will continue to do an exceptional job of preparing students for careers in education."

Rhoades has doctorate and master's degrees from UW-Madison, a master's degree from UW-Stevens Point and a bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska.

"The UW-Eau Claire School of Education is anchored by a strong tradition of excellence," Rhoades said. "I am delighted that I have been extended an opportunity to collaborate with the faculty and staff who have contributed to this tradition and who also are committed to future initiatives that promise to serve our students in exemplary ways."

As associate dean, Rhoades will be the chief academic officer for the School of Education, reporting to Clark. Rhoades will provide leadership in seeking external funding and collaborate with faculty, students and administrators. She will be an ambassador for School of Education programs and for its relationships with external agencies. She also will serve as the chief certification officer, and be involved with undergraduate and graduate programming, enrollment management and student services, grant and contract management, continuing education and community outreach.

"Katherine Rhoades has very strong connections to area school districts and to area teachers," Clark said. "She will continue to help the university and the School of Education build valuable relationships with our public schools."

Rhoades came to UW-Eau Claire in 1996 as a lecturer in women's studies. She also served as the coordinator of the Women in Transition program, a project funded by the Bremer Foundation to increase options for post-secondary education for families who live in poverty.

In 1998, Rhoades joined UW-Eau Claire's foundations of education department as a lecturer. She also served as the grant development specialist for the School of Education. Rhoades was promoted to assistant professor in 1999 and associate professor in 2002.
