UW-Eau Claire Forensics Team
Takes Seventh Place at Nationals

 MAILED:  April 30, 2003

EAU CLAIRE - The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire forensics team placed seventh at the National Forensics Association National Tournament held April 17-21 at Ball State University in Muncie, Ind.

"The team's goal was to place in the top ten," said Karen Morris, director of forensics. "We are excited about not only meeting our goal, but also exceeding it."

The team also had reason to celebrate after senior Ben Schneider, Greendale, placed first in persuasive speaking and was awarded the title of 2003 national champion in persuasive speaking. The last time UW-Eau Claire had a champion was six years ago, according to Morris.

Fellow senior team member Scott Boras, Kellogg, Minn., also was one of three UW-Eau Claire finalists at the tournament.

"What an incredible year that the only two seniors on the team this year won events at nationals," Morris said.

Individual results for the tournament are as follows:

Schneider also was a quarter-finalist in prose interpretation, after-dinner speaking, rhetorical criticism and extemporaneous speaking.

Boras took fifth place in the nation in duo interpretation with sophomore Kelly Bender, New London, and was a semi-finalist in poetry.

Bender was also a semi-finalist in after-dinner speaking.

Junior Brandon Buchanan, San Antonio, Texas, was a quarter-finalist in persuasive speaking and informative speaking.

Sophomore Andy Bevernitz, Clintonville, was a quarter-finalist in prose interpretation.
