UW-Eau Claire Jazz I to
Perform May 1

 MAILED:  April 28, 2003

EAU CLAIRE - The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Jazz Ensemble I will present a spring concert at 7:30 p.m. May 1 in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

The ensemble, conducted by Robert Baca, associate professor of music, will begin the concert with "All or Nothing At All" arranged by Pat Williams, featuring senior Tom Krochock, Minneapolis. Jazz Ensemble I will continue with "In A Rush" by Mitra Saroves, featuring senior Andrew Neesley, Glendale; "St. Louis Blues" composed by W.C. Handy and arranged by Wycliffe Gordon, featuring senior Joe Hartson, Oconomowoc, and senior Keith Hilson, Eau Claire, on trombone; and "Sparticus" by Maria Schneider, featuring senior Matt McVeigh, Stevens Point, on tenor saxophone.

The concert also will feature the premiere of "Good Mornin' Mrs. Rose" composed by senior Vincent Rose, Farmington, Minn. This piece will feature Rose on guitar and Hilson on trombone.

Jazz Ensemble I will conclude the concert with the Duke Ellington classic, "Diminuendo, Crescendo in Blue" featuring McVeigh on tenor saxophone. "This 13-minute work features the stylings of McVeigh, connecting the diminuendo and crescendo together with 26 choruses of improvisation," said Baca. "Quite an unusual feat for a young improviser."

Tickets, available at the University Service Center, (715) 836-3727 or 1-800-949-UWEC, are $4.75 for the general public; $3.75 for those 62 and older, children 17 and younger and faculty and staff with a university ID; and $1.25 for students with a university ID.
