Five Music Ensembles to Join
To Present 'Carmina Burana'

 MAILED:  April 28, 2003

EAU CLAIRE - The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire music and theatre arts department will present a Choral Union concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 4, in Zorn Arena.

Conducted by Dr. Alan Rieck, assistant professor of music and theatre arts, five UW-Eau Claire music ensembles -- University Orchestra, Symphonic Choir, Concert Choir, The Singing Statesmen and Women's Concert Chorale - will come together to perform a choral and orchestral rendition of "Carmina Burana" by Carl Orff.

A combined choir of more than 270 singers will perform several movements in "Carmina Burana." Different combinations of the choirs and soloists will perform other movements. Soloists include soprano Mitra Sadeghpour, assistant professor of music; tenor Dr. Daniel Newman, associate professor of music; and baritone Dr. Robert Knight, associate professor of music.

"Carmina Burana" is one large musical work in which music and words work together to produce an overwhelming effect. Orff composed "Carmina Burana" after he discovered the poems written by Johann Andreas in a 13th century German manuscript. The poems are religious, political, moral, erotic and satirical verses.

"Many of the tunes in this piece will be recognizable by the audience since they are used regularly in commercials and by the film industry," said Rieck. The opening movement, "O Fortuna," was used in a television commercial for Nescafe instant coffee, and other movements of "Carmina Burana" have been used in the film "Excalibur" and Oliver Stone's "The Doors."

Tickets, available at the University Service Center, (715) 836-3727 or 1-800-949-UWEC, are $4.75 for the general public; $3.75 for those 62 and older, children 17 and younger and faculty and staff with a university ID; and $1.25 for students with a university ID.
