Sec. Thompson/UW-Eau Claire commencement

Tommy Thompson, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, will deliver the "Charge to the Class" during the morning ceremony May 17 at UW-Eau Claire.

The ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m. in Zorn Arena.

There will be about 1,100 students graduating from UW-Eau Claire May 17 during two ceremonies. Students from the College of Arts and Sciences and graduate students will participate in the 9:30 a.m. ceremony. Students from the College of Business and College of Professional Studies will participate in the 2 p.m. ceremony.

Because of his travel schedule, Sec. Thompson will not be available to speak during the afternoon ceremony. The afternoon speaker has not yet been confirmed.

Two of Sec. Thompson's friends and colleagues are among the UW-Eau Claire alumni being honored by the university during its spring commencement activities. Chuck Thompson, Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Transportation from 1991-2000, will receive the UW-Eau Claire Lifetime Excellence Award. Kevin Keane, assistant secretary for public affairs for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, will receive UW-Eau Claire's Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award. Chuck Thompson is a 1958 graduate of the university and Keane graduated from UW-Eau Claire in 1987.
